Roadblock Title:
The Hidden Cost of “Instant”: Timing Decisions in Card Payments and Rewards
Time:
Tuesday - 11:30 AM (Tower C)
Abstract:
“Instant” sounds like a better experience. In credit cards, it often comes with hidden tradeoffs. This talk explores one of the most consequential but under-discussed product decisions in card programs: when payments and rewards actually apply, and when users believe they apply. We’ll walk through the lifecycle of a card payment, from user initiation to bank processing and settlement, showing where teams trade speed for certainty and risk.
Using real examples, we’ll compare immediate versus post-settlement models and how they affect available balance, failed payments, reversals, rewards timing, and customer trust. We’ll connect backend timing decisions directly to frontend issues like pending balances, disappearing points, delayed credits, and increased support burden.
