Roadblock Title:

Building a Payment Scheme for the Next 15 Million Customers

Time:

Tuesday - 3:00 PM (Tower A)

Abstract:

Monzo has 15 million customers in the UK, and we’ve learned painfully what works and what doesn’t when building payment schemes. Over the last year, we’ve built three different SEPA payment schemes to be the foundation of our ambitions to expand into the EU, taking what we learned from our UK platform and trying to bake it in from day one. And probably inventing new problems on the way.

This talk is about how our approach to payment system design has evolved, what we changed from being burned in the past, and what we’ve learned now that we’ve been in production for a while. We’ll cover everything from the customer app experience to exception handling, scaling, reconciliation, controls, and the internal tooling that keeps it all operable.

Bio:

Lauren is a Senior Engineer at Monzo, the UK’s most popular digital bank, and has spent the last year leading the technical implementation of SEPA for Monzo’s European expansion. Before that Lauren has worked on cross-border payments also at Monzo, and previously on automating data-centre provisioning at Apple, platform-as-a-service at Improbable, and real-time counterparty risk at Morgan Stanley. Lauren lives and works in London and enjoys eating food, reading novels, and 3D printing yet another drawer organizer.
