Abstract:

Many fintech companies start with off-the-shelf risk solutions for fraud detection, credit scoring, AML monitoring, and transactional risk—but as transaction volume grows and product complexity increases, these tools become expensive, inflexible, and opaque black boxes. The real roadblock hits when you decide to bring risk management in-house: suddenly, you’re responsible for integrating disparate data sources, achieving sub-second decision latency, ensuring regulatory compliance across jurisdictions, and maintaining model explainability—all while keeping costs and technical debt manageable.

In this talk, I’ll share the hard lessons from building a production-grade, multi-layer risk management engine from scratch at a mid-sized fintech company processing millions of transactions monthly.
